The cornea is a curved and transparent lens that protects our windows from the world from possible external damages, focuses the light, and plays a very important role in a healthy vision. If your cornea is failing due to an injury or diseases such as keratoconus, bullous keratopathy, we as Istanbul Med Assist provide cornea transplantation from deceased donors to correct your eyesight. Our eye doctors are highly experienced and equipped with the best technology that includes every device and instrument for your specific surgery requirement.
Cornea transplantation is a surgical procedure that is performed by our ophthalmologists, and eye specialists to remove the injured or diseased part of your cornea tissue and replace it with healthy tissue which has been taken from a donor. The procedure is also called keratoplasty and can be performed on just a part of the cornea or all cornea tissue could be replaced depending on the patient’s state. After the surgery, your vision will be restored but you have to keep in mind that every patient is different. Your eyesight may improve in a matter of weeks or a year depending entirely on your unique situation and sometimes you may feel like your vision got worse just before it gets better. Our doctors will apply a local anesthetic before surgery to numb your eye so you will be awake during surgery but there won’t be any pain.
During cornea transplantation our doctors will:
- Apply local anesthesia
- Cut the full thickness of the damaged or diseased cornea
- Replace the front and back layers of the cornea with healthy tissue
In most cases, the operation takes less than 1 hour. You can leave the hospital on the day of your surgery or spend the night given your circumstances.
